Applying Assessment Trends and Tools to Tell the Story of Student Affairs

The co-chairs of NASPA's Assessment, Evaluation & Research Knowledge Community will share trends in student affairs assessment and discuss strategies to better inform improvements as well as evidence of the impact of student affairs on higher education.

Learning Outcomes: 
  • Accurately describe the current landscape of storytelling in student affairs. 
  • Identify techniques that effectively communicate the value of student affairs. 
  • Evaluate the connection between assessment trends and the storytelling process. 
  • Describe strategies that analyze techniques being used in student affairs to tell stories. 

Shaun Boren, Ed.D.

Director, Student Life Assessment & Research

University of Florida

Dr. Shaun Born came to the University of Florida in 2017 to direct the new Office of Assessment and Research in its mission to champion a culture of evidence-based decision-making for Student Life. Prior to this role, Shaun served the University of West Florida for 12 years in a progression of experience, including creating the Outdoor Adventures program, supervising Recreational Sports programming, instructing undergraduate and graduate courses, and managing assessment initiatives for Student Affairs. His leadership style and strategies for building assessment capacity draw from his bachelor's in animal behavior, master's in experiential education, and a doctorate in physical education and health.

Kim Kruchen

Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives

CU Boulder

Kim Kruchen-Spaulding has worked in higher education for the past ten years in various roles, including academic affairs, student activities, assessment, and strategic resources. She holds an M.Ed. from the University of Virginia where she interned for the Council for Advancement of Standards and conducted research. Kim served as the director of the Office of Assessment & Planning in the Division of Student Affairs at CU Boulder from 2017-2022. In April 2022, she began a new role as Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives at CU Boulder. Her current work focuses on change management, researching effective strategies that impact students, and developing reporting practices for the division.

Continuing Education Credits

NASPA has been approved by the Higher Education Consortium for Student Affairs Certification to provide CE credit for Certified Student Affairs Educators (CSAEd). NASPA is solely responsible for all aspects of this program.

Participants who view this session will be eligible for Continuing Education (CE) credits in the Core Student Affairs Educator Certification (CSAEd™) continuing education. 

Guidelines for earning CE credit: 

1.5 CE is awarded for attending this live session OR watching it on-demand for ONE category of Continuing Education. You can not receive more than 1.5 credit hours total. 

No partial credit will be rewarded. 

Participants must also complete the feedback survey in the Online Learning Community.

To receive CSAEd credit, attendees must complete the feedback survey that offers the certification in each session. Once you have attended all the live sessions or watched the on-demand sessions for which you would like to request credit, visit the Continuing Education (CE) website to fill out the Student Affairs Education Certification Request Form for all the sessions. All certificants must fill out one for the live session and a separate one for the on-demand sessions.
