This session will provide an overview of the NCAA, as well as the health, safety, and performance priorities endorsed by the NCAA Board of Governors. This session will highlight trends in student-athlete mental health and substance use, sharing outcomes from the 2023 NCAA Student-Athlete Health and Wellness Study and other NCAA research initiatives related to student-athlete mental health and well-being. Lastly, this session will review the NCAA Mental Health Best Practices and other resources for supporting student-athlete mental health, substance misuse prevention and harm reduction.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify NCAA health, safety, and performance priorities, including mental health.
- Discuss outcomes of the 2023 NCAA Student-Athlete Health & Wellness Study, including student-athlete mental health and substance use trends.
- Review NCAA resources for supporting student-athlete mental health, including the NCAA Mental Health Best Practices.

Carey (she/her) is the Director of Health Promotion within the NCAA Sport Science Institute. In this role, Carey serves as the member point of contact for a portfolio of topics including student-athlete mental health promotion, sexual violence prevention, substance misuse prevention and harm reduction, and more. Carey is a nationally certified Physician Assistant with over 10 years of experience providing team-based patient care in the sports medicine and behavioral health fields. Carey served as Director of Clinical Assessment and Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Division of PA Education for five years, where she developed and taught behavioral health and adolescent development curriculum, as well as led the PA Student Wellness Committee. Carey earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and her master’s degree in PA Studies from the University of South Dakota. She completed an executive fellowship in addiction medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she is also PhD Candidate in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research.
