2025 Cannabis and Opioid Prevention Summit

The 2025 Cannabis and Opioid Prevention Virtual Summit will equip higher education professionals with targeted strategies to address cannabis and opioid misuse on college campuses. Through expert-led sessions and evidence-based approaches, participants will gain insights into prevention, intervention, and support frameworks that enhance student health and safety.

This one-day virtual summit features a keynote session, research, policy, and best practices presentations, and tangible resources to help campus professionals and student leaders develop or enhance their programming and services to prevent substance misuse on campus. We invite you to connect with colleagues, participate in engaging sessions, and learn from dynamic plenary sessions.

11:00 a.m.
Keynote Speaker - Dr. Jason Kilmer

Dr. Jason Kilmer, Ph.D., Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine and an Adjunct Associate Professor in Psychology at UW will be serving as our opening keynote for the 2025 Summit. His research focuses on assessing prevention and intervention strategies for alcohol, cannabis, and other drug use among college students. Join us as Dr. Kilmer sets the tone for an engaging day of connection and learning. 

12:15 p.m.
Breakout Session 1 - Young Adult Cannabis and Fentanyl Use

During this breakout session, Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, Marron and Mary Elizabeth Kendrick Professor in Pediatrics II in the Division of Adolescent Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, at Stanford University will answer the questions: Young Adult Cannabis and Fentanyl Use:  What's Going On, Why Are We Concerned, and What Can We Do? This presentation will provide a brief overview of these products, including THC levels, addiction, and other health effects, health concerns, and marketing of these products. The presentation will then focus on how best to educate, prevent, and reduce use, including several Stanford REACH Lab-created evidence-based curriculums and resources that can be used to help prevent and reduce use.

Breakout Session 2 - Emerging Best Practices & Peer Education

During Breakout Session 2 - you can choose from 1 of 2 presentations:

Breakout 2.1 - Join us for a session that highlights emerging evidence-based best practices for reducing high-risk cannabis use on college campuses. 

Breakout 2.2 - During this breakout session, Hannah Wilson, Graduate Assistant, University of Northern Colorado, will Explain the connection between long-term high potency cannabis use and mental health and wellbeing among college students. The session will then outline the logistics, processes and pivotal role of Peer Health Educators in effectively implementing the Hey, Bud Box program - a peer led program developed to combat high-risk cannabis use. 

2:45 p.m.
Breakout Session 3 - Simultaneous Alcohol and Cannabis Use

Summit attendees will come back together during this breakout session join Dr. Christine Lee from the University of Washington Department of Psychiatry and Center for the Study of Health and Risk Behaviors for a conversation about the impacts of simultaneous Alcohol and Cannabis Use. 

4:00 p.m.
Breakout Session 4 - Opioids and Polysubstance Use

Join SAFE Project as they explore: Turning the Tide: Understanding the Current Wave of the Overdose Crisis. In this session, presenters will share key updates and resources to help navigate the overdose crisis in 2025, and the role of opioids and polysubstance use within this context. Presenters will review data on polysubstance use in campus settings and reflect on the potential for stigma to impede effective intervention, and attendees will better understand how to evaluate current campus approach to overdose prevention and response.
