2025 European Conference Virtual Orientation - First-Timers at ECSAS: Your Guide to Getting Started

Welcome to ECSAS 2025! This orientation session is designed especially for first-time attendees to provide guidance and help participants feel prepared to dive in on day 1. The session will cover the conference structure, highlight key moments not to miss, and share tips for building connections. Attendees will also hear from previous participants who will share their insights and advice, followed by a Q&A to address questions. Whether the goal is learning, networking, or exploring new collaborations, this session will set the stage for an engaging and inspiring conference experience. 

Conference Theme:

Student Affairs and Services Professionals are essential in shaping the student experience and supporting students' overall well-being and personal development, helping them thrive in all areas of life. Recognizing this, the latest edition of ECSAS will delve into how the role is evolving; examining how emerging needs and societal trends influence professionals’ approaches to student engagement, and how they can continue to grow and adapt in an ever-changing environment.

Chris Campbell is the Senior Director of Identity and Cultural Engagement at Amherst College (USA), where he provides strategic leadership for six centers within the Office of Identity and Cultural Resources. He partners with students, staff, and faculty to advance Amherst’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through policies, programs, and initiatives that foster belonging and cultural engagement across campus. His career has been dedicated to student success, identity-centered programming, and creating inclusive communities in higher education.

Denise Balfour Simpson is an Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and the Dean of Students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (USA), where she oversees services related to student advocacy, crisis response, student conduct, basic needs insecurity, and financial wellbeing. She serves as a key resource for students, helping navigate challenges and promoting a safe, equitable, and supportive campus environment. She brings to her work a passion for mentorship, change management, and a belief in the transformative power of higher education.

Dr. Janelle Nicole Rahyns is a global higher education leader with more than two decades of experience advancing student development, international engagement, and organizational impact across universities and professional associations worldwide. She currently serves as Senior Director of Global Impact at NASPA, where she leads the association’s global strategy, oversees international partnerships, and drives cross‑functional initiatives that strengthen professional learning, staff development, and global program delivery.

A scholar‑practitioner with deep expertise in international and comparative education, Dr. Rahyns has shaped global learning ecosystems across more than 50 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, and the Americas. Her leadership portfolio includes executive oversight of global conferences, intercultural learning programs, virtual education platforms, and multi‑country academic initiatives.

Prior to her senior leadership roles at NASPA, Dr. Rahyns served as Vice Rector and Assistant Dean at Yale‑NUS College in Singapore, where she provided institutional leadership for academic advising, student development, diversity and inclusion, crisis response, and residential education. She has also held multiple roles with Semester at Sea and UCLA Residential Life, contributing to research, assessment, student conduct, leadership development, and global experiential learning.

Dr. Rahyns holds a Ph.D. in Social Sciences and Comparative Education from the University of California, Los Angeles; an M.Ed. in Student Personnel in Higher Education from the University of Florida; and a B.A. in Political Science. She is an IASAS Global Expert and has served as a delegate and program lead for numerous international summits and conferences.

Across her career, Dr. Rahyns has been recognized for her strategic vision, global perspective, and ability to build inclusive, high‑impact learning communities. She continues to champion international collaboration, leadership development, and transformative educational experiences for students and professionals around the world.
