Core Certification Exam Prep: The Testing Experience

Most student affairs professionals have not taken a multiple choice exam in many years. This session will explore how to prepare for the core certification exam, what to expect, and tips for making the online testing experience smooth and stress-free. Participants will hear advice from certificants who have passed the exam and learn what to expect by exploring sample questions. You will leave this session intrigued and excited to pursue certification!

This Zoom session will include an overview presentation and provide an opportunity for participants to ask questions of certificants.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify preparation strategies for the exam
  • Recognize the logistics of how the exam is administered, and what to expect on exam day
  • Learn about the exam experience from those who have taken and passed the exam

Melissa has worked in Student Life for over 10 years focusing on residence life and student activities. She just transitioned to a new position of Assistant Director of Residence Life and Housing. She currently holds her core certification and 4 specialty certifications: Housing, Campus Activities, Student Conduct, Campus Recreation. Melissa graduated from Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Master of Education in Coaching, Sport, Recreation, and Fitness Administration.

Benjamin Williams, CSAEd

Benjamin M. Williams is the Assistant Dean of Students at Miami University, where he oversees restorative practices in conduct and Title IX cases, outreach for the Office of the Dean of Students, manages Campus Climate Concerns and supports students in crisis. Prior to this role, he worked in higher education for ten years and most recently served as a Development Officer and the Director of Student Orientation & Family Engagement at Georgia State University. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Georgia State University, his Master of Science in Student Affairs in Higher Education at Miami University, and is completing his Ph.D. in Education Policy Studies at Georgia State University, studying sense of belonging and campus ecology.

Outside of his professional work, he volunteers with a variety of organizations, including NASPA as a member foundation the Board of Directors and the Co-Chair of the Mid-Level Administrator Steering Committee, Board of Directors for Equality Ohio, and on the Board of Visitors for the College of Arts & Sciences at Georgia State University.
