Global Perspectives on Student Affairs: Focus on South Asia and Oceania

This particular program is the Global Perspective focus on South Asia and Oceana. Three prominent speakers will be sharing their knowledge and experiences within higher education in their respective countries.

Lucinda Malgas, Global Engagement Manager Asia Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) will discuss "APAIE and Student wellbeing". It would be a brief introduction to the Asia Pacific Association for International Education. What is APAIE’s role in the internationalisation of higher education and how does this link to student care and wellbeing?

Emily O’ Callaghan, CEO miXabroad will discuss 'From Satisfaction to Impact: Using Data to Strengthen Student Services'. This talk will will highlight insights from institutions worldwide that have collaborated on a global benchmark of international experiences, comparing results, and revealing both common strengths and areas for growth. Key themes include the importance of belonging and connectedness on campus, the employability benefits of international experiences, and the role of student affairs in supporting students across the full journey. Participants will gain evidence of what matters most to students and how data can strengthen program quality and enhance student outcomes.

Dr. Sushmita Roy, Assistant General Manager - Office of International Affairs & Global Initiatives O. P. Jindal Global University (JGU) will discuss 'From Campus to Global Citizenship: Reimagining Student Services through Internationalisation at Home'. This talk will explores how international student services can serve as a pathway for cultivating global citizens, drawing on the Indian ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. Using the case of O.P. Jindal Global University, the discussion will examine practices that integrate intercultural learning, foster inclusivity, and strengthen the international student journey. Attention will also be given to challenges such as navigating diverse student needs, financial concerns, and the importance of training staff to deliver culturally competent support. Emphasis will be placed on internationalisation at home as a key strategy to extend global learning opportunities to all students. Participants will gain insights into building responsive, student-centered services that enhance belonging, strengthen institutional capacity, and prepare graduates for a borderless world.

Asia Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE)

Lucinda Malgas is the Global Engagement Manager for the Asia Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE). With over three decades of experience in education, student management, wellbeing, leadership on educational executive and various Boards, policy development and advocacy, she has established herself as a key figure in the education sector. Lucinda is also a registered Counsellor and her longstanding commitment to equity in education is in part reflected in her work with Indigenous, international, and refugee students, as well as the organisations that support them.

As part of her role for APAIE, Lucinda has created the Asia Pacific Indigenous Engagement Network, Students4Students Network and the Asia Pacific International Student Support Association. Other aspects of her role include research into the trends in the internationalisation of Higher Education and presentations at a variety of conferences and workshops around the world.

Emily O’Callaghan

Emily O’Callaghan is the CEO and Co-Founder of miXabroad, a global platform leveraging its partner network to comparatively measure the impact and experience of outward learning programs and internationalisation at home. A senior leader in international education, she has more than 20 years of experience across advocacy, policy, research, partnerships, and institutional development, with roles spanning recruitment, transnational education, learning abroad, pathways, and admissions.

Emily has worked with EdTech firms, education agents, peak bodies, and universities, bringing deep expertise in student mobility, engagement, and sector policy. She has led international engagement across regions including South Asia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Emily is an International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) Senior Fellow, a member of the IEAA Data Group, and a CANIE Global Board member. She is also Co-Founder of the IEAA Young Professionals Network, and the Climate Action Barometer for International Education. 

Sushmita Roy

O.P. Jindal Global University (JDU)

Sushmita Roy is a senior member of the International Office at O.P. Jindal Global University, where she works at the intersection of student services, policy, and intercultural engagement. An Erasmus+ beneficiary and graduate in European Studies, she brings first-hand experience of the international student journey to her professional practice. Her research interests focus on internationalisation of home and the design of inclusive student support structures that foster global citizenship. At JGU, she has been actively involved in building initiatives that create meaningful interactions between international and domestic students, strengthening both belonging and intercultural learning

Omneya Badr (Moderator)

Omneya Badr, an educator and student affairs professional, gained a culturally diverse experience studying, teaching, and working in Bahrain, Qatar, Egypt, UK and the USA. Omneya is a longtime NASPA volunteer. She was the director of MENASA NASPA area 2022-2024, the 2021 and 2022 MENASA Conference chair, member of NASPA's International Symposium Committee and the International Education Knowledge Community (IEKC). She is a frequent presenter at NASPA conferences and her research interests are culturally based Academic Advising, supporting First-generation students, FYE, and cross-cultural communication. She holds an MBA from the University of Bath – UK, a Certificate of Entrepreneurial and Small Business Operation from the Academy of Arts, California - USA, and a BA in Management from the American University in Cairo - Egypt. She recently acquired a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace Certificate from the University of South Florida - USA. As an educator, Omneya enjoys giving back to the profession and is interested in creating professional development opportunities and encouraging Student Affairs Professionals to research and share knowledge among counterparts around the world.
